Giants Announce Tyler Beede Has Flexor Strain and UCL Sprain Following Tests on Elbow
By Adam Weinrib
It appears one former Giants top prospect is about to be dealt some news that'll further derail his path.
Tyler Beede, once San Francisco's first-round pick in 2014 out of Vanderbilt, is now 26, and has seen quite a bit of his prospect shine worn off. His first full season came last year in 2019, and resulted in a 5.08 ERA, though 113 Ks in 117 innings served as a bright spot.
However, Beede's peripherals be damned, he's been thrown off course once again. After an exam to determine the root cause of his elbow pain, Beede's been informed of essentially his worst-case scenario.
Pending that forthcoming second opinion, these are all the ingredients for Tommy John surgery, though we of course won't say that with any certainty until the team does.
In the short term, the Giants have lost one of the five likely members of their rotation, a group that's about to welcome Johnny Cueto back from TJS rehab of his own.
In the long term, though, we're not sure where Beede goes from here, with most of his post-draft status already worn away.
