Giants' Contract Offer to Madison Bumgarner Revealed
By Scott Rogust
San Francisco Giants fans were stunned to find out their division rival, the Arizona Diamondbacks, nabbed ace Madison Bumgarner in free agency. Not the Los Angeles Dodgers, but the D-Backs.
Many wondered why the Giants didn't match the relatively cheap deal, and now we know what offer Farhan Zaidi and Co. put forth to the three-time World Series champ.
According to NBC Sports Bay Area, the Giants offered Bumgarner a four-year, $70 million contract.
While the contract is less in total money, Bumgarner actually would've made more in annual salary if he re-signed with the Giants. Had he stayed in San Francisco, he would receive $17.5 million, as opposed to the $17 million in AAV given to him by the Diamondbacks.
Yet, the deal-breaker for the Giants was the fifth year, something they were unwilling to commit to the 30-year-old pitcher. The D-Backs obliged on that request, and that was the difference-maker.
Bumgarner was reportedly expected to command a contract that exceeded $100 million, but no team was willing to do so, even the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to NBC Sports Bay Area.
Long story short, the Arizona Diamondbacks offered Madison Bumgarner's coveted five-year contract, and that officially laid any return to San Francisco to rest.
