Giants Declaring No QB Competition Means Eli Manning is Getting His Very Last Chance
By Brian Cass
If you're a New York Giants fan and weren't a fan of the Daniel Jones pick in this year's draft, it looks like you lucked out. You won't have to see him in game action for at least another year!
Usually when a team takes a QB as high as the Giants took Jones (sixth overall), said team intends on playing him in year one. But as everyone knows, the Giants' organization is completely enamored with Eli Manning, so much so that they won't even have him compete for the starting job with Jones in camp this year.
Manning's play as been on a downward trend for years now, and the Jones selection seemed to mark the beginning of the end for the Manning era in New York. But as GM Dave Gettleman and the rest of the Giants continue to prove this offseason, they aren't concerned with winning unless Manning is at the helm.
Manning hasn't made a Pro Bowl since 2015, and since then he's posted pretty underwhelming numbers. In the three years following 2015, Manning has amassed 66 passing touchdowns to 40 interceptions and a record of 19-28.
Obviously, Eli isn't the only problem in New York, but let's not pretend like he isn't part of it.
The Giants can say they're behind Eli Manning all they want, but if he comes out this year and stinks up the joint and the team gets off to a bad start, there's no reason we shouldn't see Jones on the field. With the number of holes on the Giants' roster, it's more than likely that Jones will get some playing time in his rookie season.
