Giants Fans' Old Comments About Drafting Madison Bumgarner in 2007 Are Hilarious
By Michael Luciano
Madison Bumgarner was one of the most popular players in the Bay Area during his decade-long tenure with the San Francisco Giants, but he had to win over a lot of angry Giants supporters before that could be made possible.
Back in the day, Giants fans weren't thrilled about the idea of using a No. 10 overall pick on a high school left-hander from North Carolina, as evidenced by the dozens of comments calling for GM Brian Sabean's head in the immediate aftermath.
Sorry, VoxMediaUser12712, the Giants didn't fire everyone after this draft. Refusing to do so brought them three championships in five seasons.
The four most common players Giants fans seem to have preferred over Bumgarner at the time were Rick Porcello, Jason Heyward, Phillippe Aumont, and Beau Mills. While Porcello and Heyward have both had fine pro careers, with the former even winning a Cy Young, both can't hold a candle to Bumgarner when you consider the totality of their careers.
Aumont was considered the prize return for the Philadelphia Phillies in a deal that sent Cliff Lee to the Seattle Mariners, but he played in just 46 MLB games and posted a 6.80 ERA in those games. Mills stalled out in Double-A with the Cleveland Indians and never made it to the majors.
The Giants knew that Bumgarner would speed through the minors and help them contend quickly. He anchored their rotation for a decade, which is just about all you can ask of a player picked that high.
