Giants GM Dave Gettleman Deserves One More Season
The New York Giants are scuffling toward the end of another double-digit loss campaign in 2019. That means head coach Pat Shurmur could be fired and GM Dave Gettleman could be on the way out as well.
Yet for now, it appears Gettleman is safe, and deservedly so.
The GM has been on the job for two years and has made some controversial decisions. He let Landon Collins walk in free agency and traded both Odell Beckham Jr. and Olivier Vernon to the Cleveland Browns.
All three of those players are having disappointing 2019 seasons and Gettleman got a first-round pick for Beckham, making the moves actually look smart now that time has passed. He also got a top guard in Kevin Zeitler in exchange for an oft-injured Vernon.
The next decision he has to make is on Shurmur, but letting him go will be a no-brainer.
Gettleman should get the 2020 season to put a new head coach in and see if that individual can take the assembled talent and put together a winning season.
However, if Daniel Jones shows signs of regression and Gettleman makes more controversial draft picks that don't turn out, 2020 should be his last season. In fact, it may take a playoff berth to save his job. The team can't leave him in charge to handle the roster if high draft picks aren't resulting in playoff appearances for a franchise with such a high standard.
Gettleman deserves one more year. Let's see if the guys upstairs decide to give it to him.
