Giants Might Trade Down From No. 4 and That Could Be Okay if it Wasn't Dave Gettleman Making the Decision

The New York Giants have been terrible in the two seasons with Dave Gettleman serving as general manager. The team sputtered to a 4-12 finish in 2019 and now owns the No. 4 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
So far, Gettleman has used his top two draft picks on Saquon Barkley and Daniel Jones. The former has shown to be a dominant player while the latter was a reach at No. 6 overall, despite showing good potential in 2019. Now, with another premium pick, OF ALL YEARS, Gettleman is considering trading down next week.

Really? You took Barkley at No. 2 when the Giants didn't need a running back given their awful situation and then took Jones at No. 6 when he probably could've been had outside the top 10? Why is this the year to trade down when a guy like Isaiah Simmons or Tristan Wirfs will fall into your lap?
Trading out of such a high pick should realistically bring back a good return, but now is just not the time to do this. Gettleman hasn't done anything to earn trust when it comes to making such a move given his last two first-round picks. While they weren't awful, they certainly lacked thoughtful strategy, especially given the Giants needs and the other talent they could have selected.

The Giants have had three straight losing seasons and Gettleman has become a bit of a punchline for his old-school approach. Trading down and losing out on a talent the team absolutely needs without getting an incredible return will officially doom him in New York.
