Giants Make First Surprise Pick of NFL Draft and Reach for Georgia OL Andrew Thomas
By Michael Luciano
Iowa's Tristan Wirfs and Louisville's Mekhi Becton's were considered the top offensive tackles in the 2020 NFL Draft, but the tackle-needy New York Giants decided on Georgia's Andrew Thomas with the No. 4 overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft.
Thomas was selected with a pick that many believed the Giants were shopping in trade talks.
However, Thomas was projected to go in the middle of the first round, so the Giants reached a bit here. Fans likely would have preferred a trade down or the selection of Isaiah Simmons, but general manager Dave Gettleman feels like he got his guy.
Thomas was one of the most consistent linemen in the country at Georgia, as he made his mark by shutting down the best pass rushers in the SEC thanks to his freaky strength.
While he was struggling with rushers that had tremendous speed, Thomas is a mechanically sound tackle with experience at both spots. Daniel Jones should be kept upright much more frequently next season.
Gettleman has a history of building his teams from the inside out, and the selection of Thomas confirms that he's still trying to build Jones a solid offensive line. Expect Thomas to start in Year 1 and stick there for the next decade.
