Giants Shockingly Release Trade Deadline Acquisition and Former All-Star Scooter Gennett

The San Francisco Giants are throwing in the towel with a bit more velocity now, as they've already given up on one of their trade deadline acquisitions. The team sits 4.5 games back of the second Wild Card spot in the National League, unlikely to gain enough ground and leapfrog enough teams to make the postseason.

The Giants put infielder Scooter Gennett on waivers Tuesday just a month after trading for him from the Cincinnati Reds.

The second baseman struggled all season with the Reds, and a change of scenery didn't help. In 133 at-bats with both Cincinnati and San Francisco this season, Gennett hit .226 with a .245 OBP and a -0.7 WAR.

Gennett started the year on the Injured List with a serious groin injury, costing him the first three months of the season. He never found his footing upon return, prompting the Reds to trade him.

The young second baseman never resembled the player from his 2018 season, in which he earned an All-Star bid by hitting .310 with a .357 OBP.

As the season comes to a close, both the Giants and Gennett are looking to start fresh in hopes of catapulting towards success next season and beyond. Gennett unfortunately must enter free agency on the heels of an injury-marred campaign.
