Giants Sign Veteran Starter Tyson Ross to Minor-League Deal
By Karl Rasmussen
After a rough stint with the Detroit Tigers was cut short due to injury, Tyson Ross found himself looking to rebound with a strong campaign this year.
Despite his limited -- and rather disappointing -- body of work in 2019, Ross has managed to find a home for the 2020 campaign.
According to Bob Nightengale, Ross has signed with the San Francisco Giants on a minor-league deal, and they'll become the latest hosts of his comeback attempt. If salvageable, he'll once again be a solid deadline piece.
The 32-year-old will earn $1.75 million in base salary, with an additional $1.75 million to be collected via incentives, if he can earn a spot on the major league roster.
In seven starts last year, Ross went 1-5 with a 6.11 ERA. He struck out 25 batters in 35.1 innings, making his final appearance of the season on May 10.
Ross has been somewhat of a journeyman throughout his MLB career. The Giants will be the sixth club he's played for across 10 seasons, and his fifth destination since 2017.
His best season came back in 2014 with the Padres, when he made the NL All-Star team (his lone appearance) while logging a 2.81 ERA and striking out 195 batters.
It's doubtful Ross can reproduce even a semblance of that type of season in San Francisco, but this remains a low-risk move for the Giants.
