Cowboys Scouting Legend Gil Brandt Shares Story About Friendship With 10-Year-Old Bill Belichick
By Brady Williams

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick celebrated his 68th birthday on Thursday, and plenty of people were wishing him well on the big day. One of the more interesting happy birthday tweets came from none other than former Dallas Cowboys vice president Gil Brandt.
The 87-year-old Dallas legend, who's quite active on Twitter, recalled the first time he interacted with the now-iconic coach. It happened when Belichick was only 10 years old, and Brandt was in his early days with the Cowboys front office.
Happy 68th, Bill Belichick. I remember our first interaction 58 years ago when I sent you a Staubach jersey as a thank you to your father for filling out scouting reports for us. I've enjoyed our friendship through the years. Call me later; I've got a late-round sleeper for you.

Belichick's father, Steve -- who literally wrote the book on scouting in the NFL -- apparently did some work for Brandt, and that was the first proper encounter the two had.
It's always fascinating to see how closely NFL circles tend to run, and Bill Belichick receiving a Roger Staubach jersey as a child really hammers home how the eight-time Super Bowl winner has been around the sport for basically each and every one of his 68 years on earth.
Today, April 16th, is Bill Belichick's 68th birthday and the 20-year anniversary of the Patriots using their 6th round of the 2000 NFL Draft on Tom Brady.

It's also hard not to enjoy knowing the guy who signed Roger Staubach was passing on a jersey to the family of the guy who drafted Tom Brady.
Now, we just want to know who that late-round sleeper is.
