Gio Urshela is Hitting Literally 1.000 With the Bases Loaded and That Seems Pretty Good

If you had said before the season that Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar was going to be hitting .333 by the end of May, it would have been a bit outlandish, but somewhat understandable. If you had said that minor league infielder Gio Urshela was going to be hitting .333 while Andujar went 6-for-47 in a shortened season, you would have been committed.

And yet, here we are, almost 50 games into the season. Not only has Urshela been tearing the cover off the ball in any situation, but he's been perfect with the based loaded, going 4-for-4 with 8 RBI.

But the story doesn't stop there. With runners in scoring position and two outs, when your clutch gene really has to shine, Urshela is a cool 7-for-14 with 8 RBI. Considering he was supposed to be flying coach in Scranton for the whole year at the start of the season, that almost defies belief.

Urshela kept up his scalding ways going in Thursday's 6-5 win over the Baltimore Orioles, where he broke a 1-1 deadlock with a two-run RBI single to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.

Miguel who?

Urshela has gone from minor league afterthought to solid fill-in to indispensable infielder in a month and a half. If he keeps this hitting up, Brian Cashman should be awarded the Medal of Freedom for going dumpster diving in the scrap heap that is free agency and finding Urshela.
