Gleyber Torres Returns to Yankees Lineup Sunday After Resting Core Issue
By Jerry Trotta
Prior to the Yankees clash against the Blue Jays on Saturday, Gleyber Torres fielded grounded balls at second and shortstop and took batting practice with the club, hinting to many pundits that would be ready to be inserted back into Aaron Boone's lineup card for Sunday's series finale.
Well, that turned out to be exactly the case, as the budding superstar will appear for the Pinstripes as they look to salvage a series split. Breyvic Valera headed back to Triple-A, making the move official.
Saturday's workout was Gleyber's first since leaving Tuesday's game against the Orioles with what the organization described as "core pain." He subsequently returned to the Bronx for tests and (thankfully) avoided a stint on the injured list.
Torres ends up only missing four games and the narrative surrounding his injury is truly one of the more positive surrounding the Yanks injury-riddled 2019 season (though it's still utterly mysterious; no physicians found anything wrong with him).
All that's left to do now is hope that the All-Star infielder avoids a setback and picks up where he left off before the knock -- utterly tattooing baseballs, and AL East pitching in particular.
The smart money, of course, is on Torres showing out in his return. Is there a better choice to spark a club in the midst of a two-game skid? With the way he's been mashing of late, probably not.
