Gleyber Torres Sent to Hospital for Tests After Experiencing 'Core Issue'
By Adam Weinrib
When Gleyber Torres left the game early on Sunday night, after showing very little discomfort, Yankee fans were (rightfully) concerned. After all, they'd heard this story before.
The stalwart second baseman smacked three homers in the first few games of the weekend's four-game set against the Red Sox, but looked a bit off on Sunday night.
Turns out, Torres was experiencing an issue with his core, and went to the hospital for tests postgame.
Perhaps it's time to check in on the old strength and conditioning coaches again? It seemed they failed early, and it certainly seems they're failing again late in 2019.
Cue the "Can Clint Frazier learn second base?" tweets.
The most recent Yankee to develop a core issue, Luke Voit, worsened his throughout the course of his rehabilitation. Voit initially left the team's London matchup with what was identified as an abdominal strain, but watched his issue develop into a sports hernia by the end of July; he may undergo surgery.
The Yankees can weather the storm this year; they've proven as much thus far, repeatedly. But they don't want to, and certainly need the 22-year-old Torres healthy to carry the load once the pressure mounts.
