3 Trade Targets for the Golden State Warriors After the 2019-20 NBA Season
By Alexander Wolz
The Golden State Warriors' fall from grace has been drastic. Following the departure of Kevin Durant and numerous key injuries, the Dubs went from the league's best to more or less the worst in one single season.
However, with Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson returnung to health and Andrew Wiggins getting a chance to be the best version of himself come 2020-21, the Warriors are due for a resurgence. With multiple tools at their disposal, these three trade targets should be of great interest to Bob Myers and the Warriors this summer.
3. Will Barton
As part of the deal to offload Andre Iguodala to Memphis, the Warriors earned a $17 million trade exception, enabling them to trade for anyone below that cost without needing to match salaries themselves by giving up assets. If Golden State dedicated most of those funds to one player, Will Barton may be the best option. While the Nuggets have built a very strong bond with Barton, the money Denver must dedicate moving forward may prove too much for them to handle, especially considering the major contracts they handed Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic. Barton has the athleticism and ability to add to a dynamic Warriors offense, and his contract is one they can afford.
2. Marcus Smart
One of the biggest losses for the Warriors has undoubtedbly been Iguodala. The hard-nosed Marcus Smart could act as the perfect replacement, and a much younger one. In addition to ferocious defense, Smart has gradually improved as a scorer, making him an ideal fit for the Warriors' versatile style of play. Boston has also been home for Smart since he came into the league, but if a change in scenery, is in the offing, he flies in underneath the treshold of the Warriors' trade exception -- don't rule out a move to San Francisco that makes Golden State arguably the nastiest defensive team in the NBA.
1. Giannis Antetokounmpo
Believe it! Discussing the upcoming offseason without referencing Giannis Antetokounmpo just wouldn't make sense. His future in Milwaukee is unpredictable, as the team has yet to reach the Finals and doesn't boast the flash or the amenities of other markets. There is perhaps no better destination to land in than San Francisco, and you can bet that the Warriors will do whatever is necessary to land the MVP -- even saying goodbye to a major piece like Draymond Green. Waiting around for a sign-and-trade, as was done for D'Angelo Russell, is another route, but Golden State would face a tight financial situation in that scenario. Whichever route they pursue, expect the Warriors to pull out all the stops in hopes of a blockbuster move for the history books.
