Grading the Chiefs' Offseason So Far
By Michael Luciano
The Kansas City Chiefs haven't added many new pieces to a team just a few weeks removed from winning a Super Bowl, but they still have had a pretty solid offseason by virtue of retaining plenty of key members from that dominant squad.
The Chiefs retained one of the biggest free agents on the market when they brought back defensive tackle Chris Jones via the franchise tag. They also managed to re-sign fullback Anthony Sherman and run-stuffer Mike Pennel.
Some might look at the job Brett Veach has done and still find ways to criticize the Chiefs GM, as he appears no closer to a long-term deal with Jones, didn't make a marquee free-agent signing, and allowed stud cornerback Kendall Fuller to leave for the Washington Redskins.
Those might all be true, but he didn't have much salary cap room to work with. The fact that three major contributors returned this year deserves a lot of credit. This could have been a lot worse.
On top of that, he added a couple of low-key players in Antonio Hamilton and Mike Remmers. Hamilton figures to contribute to the special teams unit in a big way and add depth to the secondary while Remmers provides another veteran option along the offensive line.
Veach did the best he could with what he was handed. They brought back Jones and few other contributors while keeping the nucleus of their Super Bowl team intact. Altogether, this has been a B+/A- offseason for Kansas City, even if they didn't add any notable talent.
