5 Funniest Bill Belichick Press Conferences in Honor of His 68th Birthday
By Michael Luciano
While he will always be known for his unparalleled success as head coach of the New England Patriots and his unleashing of Lawrence Taylor with the New York Giants, one of the most memorable aspects of Bill Belichick's legacy, for better or worse, was his confrontational-at-times relationship with the media and his desire to give reports absolutely nothing to chew on. In honor of his 68th birthday today, these five press conference gems are classic and quintessential Belichick in every way.
5. "I'm Trying To Coach A Football Team"
The most common mistake reporters make in a Belichick presser is asking him non-football questions during the week of a game. In December of 2017, rather than discuss his relationship with Tom Brady and trainer Alex Guerrero, Belichick lashed out and gave this reporter nothing noteworthy whatsoever, even going to far as to correct the reporter's grammar. Ruthless.
4. "Seattle"
A common deflection tactic Belichick uses is repeating the name of the team he is going to play -- in this case from November 2016, the Seattle Seahawks -- in an attempt to keep all questions related to football matters. Anytime a question not related to injuries, his gameplan, or the team itself is asked, Belichick dismisses it by reminding everyone what exactly he's answering questions about. Not super polite, but truly a staple of Belichick media availability.
3. "I'm Not On SnapFace"
Bill is painfully old-fashioned in his ways, but those methods have helped the Patriots become the preeminent NFL franchise of the last two decades. A man who often speaks on the pitfalls associated with social media, Belichick proudly professed in 2017 that he doesn't have "SnapFace" or any other kind of accursed social media account. Even now, Belichick has yet to join Twitter or Facebook... or SnapFace!
2. "We're On To Cincinnati"
This is much like his "Seattle" refrain, but this one became a rally cry during a season that ended up with New England hoisting the Lombardi trophy. On the rare occasion that someone did beat Belichick's teams, he's had a real talent for remaining unflustered and moving on to the next game on the schedule. This mantra after getting pantsed by the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football early in the 2014 season helped New England recenter and take home a title.
1. "Stats Are For Losers"
Very rarely does Belichick go for the jugular, but when he does, he's never missed. While calling Philadelphia Eagles receiver Freddie Mitchell "terrible" during Super Bowl preparation before holding him to one catch for 11 yards in the actual game could have taken the No. 1 spot, this takes the cake. After Carolina Panthers cornerback Chris Gamble mocked Randy Moss after a poor statistical game, Belichick mused that stats were for "losers," while "final scores are for winners." Gamble was burnt in coverage often in that 2009 season, and he was burnt in the media by a 57-year-old man. Ouch.
