5 Packers Players Who Will Get Overpaid in Free Agency
By Michael Luciano
As tempting as it may be for the Green Bay Packers to go totally overboard in free agency, especially given how opening up the wallet last campaign landed them season-changing players like Preston Smith and Za'Darius Smith, they need to exercise some caution as the 2020 league year begins. These five Packer free agents are likely going to command a steep salary in free agency, and retaining them for a hefty chunk of money might price the Packers out of some other big-name free agents.
5. CB Tramon Williams
Williams had a tremendous season at the age of 36, but cornerbacks at that age aren't the most reliable bet to continue performing at a high level. With Jaire Alexander, Josh Jackson, and Kevin King already on the roster, the Packers have a few perfect excuses to not bring back Williams for another season.
4. WR Geronimo Allison
Allison gradually fell down the Packers' wide receiver depth chart last season, and the emergence of Allen Lazard as the team's No. 2 target was a major ding to Allison's value in free agency. His size and speed combination will get some team to fall in love with him, but the Packers shouldn't feel forced to bring him back unless he accepts a noticeable discount.
3. EDGE Kyler Fackrell
Fackrell topped 10 sacks in 2018, but he managed just one in the entire 2019 campaign after the two Smiths ate up all of his playing time. Even when Fackrell was available, he looked more sluggish and less explosive than either of Green Bay's starters. Fackrell is a decent backup pass rusher, but some foolish team will pay him starter money this offseason. Steer clear, Green Bay!
2. LB Blake Martinez
Martinez is one of the most productive tacklers in all of football, but it would be unintelligent to stick to tackling stats to gauge overall production from linebackers here and now. Martinez is not a top-shelf athlete, and he was a frequent target of creative offensive coordinators in the passing game. He will cost something approaching a king's ransom to bring back, and the fact that this upcoming NFL Draft is full of athletic linebackers makes cutting ties with him that much easier.
1. OT Bryan Bulaga
If there is one player that Green Bay should consider bringing back on this list, it's stalwart right tackle Bryan Bulaga.. The former Iowa Hawkeye has been a mainstay along the offensive line, but the lack of quality right tackles available on the market this offseason could force a team to break open the piggy bank and hand Bulaga a contract that far exceeds how he has performed over the last few seasons. Still, Bulaga was an effective pass protector last season, and it would surely peeve Aaron Rodgers if his fan favorite was allowed to leave.
