Green Bay Still Needs Explosive Aaron Rodgers Week to Prove New Offense Works
By Jerry Trotta
Yes, the Green Bay Packers are 3-0 and sit atop the NFC North after three weeks of the 2019 season, but the football they've given us has done very little to quell the skeptics of their coaching change.
If not for the team's revamped and apparently elite defense, the Pack could have easily lost two (or maybe even all three) games.
On Sunday, Matt LaFleur's offense once again shined early on, only to fade and give the opposition a genuine shot at a victory. As was the case against the Bears and Vikings, the defense stepped up to seal the deal Sunday against the Broncos.
It's time the NFL realizes the sheer potential of Green Bay's defense, but an offense with Aaron Rodgers under center should NOT have to be bailed out as often as they've had to be in 2019, especially under LaFleur's new and acclaimed system.
Through three games, Rodgers has thrown for just 412 yards (good for a lowly 137.3 yards per game) and three touchdowns, while completing just 62.5 percent of his passes.
We don't have to tell you just how far off those numbers are from the two-time MVP's all-time great norm.
"Well enough" isn't going to cut it once the Packers start squaring off against offenses not being conducted by the likes of Mitchell Trubisky, Kirk Cousins, and Joe Flacco -- arguably three of the league's worst-performing gunslingers thus far.
All we are asking for is for Rodgers to erupt for one of his mind-bogglingly awesome 60-minute spectacles. Given his historic career, that is anything but a farfetched request.
Then, and only then, will we buy into Green Bay's lofty potential.
