Greg Bird Signing With Red Sox Would Make More Sense Than Fans Think
By Mark Powell
We love offseason storylines, but even we wouldn't see this one coming.
The Yankees DFA'd Greg Bird along with Jacoby Ellsbury when they submitted their 40-man roster prior to the Rule-5 deadline. The move was expected as Bird's had ample opportunity in New York, yet is constantly injured. The Yankees and Bird need a fresh start.
Yet, could Bird remain in the AL East with the Yankees' enemy in Boston? The New York Post seems to think so.
Several MLB scouts didn't shake off the possibility of Bird heading to Boston. His lack of positional flexibility makes Bird a better fit in the American League, where he could serve as a DH or first baseman. Bird's age, however, makes him a candidate as a minor-league flyer. At just 27, the injury risk is there, but so are the intangibles.
In a 41-game stretch for the Yankees in 2015, Bird flashed his glove and some power at the dish, hitting 11 home runs and driving in 31 RBIs. Since then, however, various injuries have kept him off the diamond or in the Yankees minor league system.
Of course, the Yankees always have the option to re-sign Bird to a minor league deal where he could compete with the likes of Luke Voit and Mike Ford in Spring Training. However, given his complicated history in the Bronx, that doesn't seem likely.
Why not Boston?
