Greg Holland Signs With Nationals Again

Greg Holland has struggled to find a permanent home in baseball over the past two seasons, so he is headed back to the place he had the most success in 2018.

Greg Holland has agreed to sign a minor-league contract with the Washington Nationals after being designated for assignment by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Holland won the World Series with the Kansas City Royals in 2015, where he was an integral part of the back end of their bullpen. After Tommy John surgery cost him the entirety of the 2016 season, Holland signed with the Colorado Rockies for the 2017 season. Holland led the National League in saves with Colorado, helping him land a one-year, $14 million deal with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018.

That's when things started trending downward for Holland.

Holland was released from the Cards after appearing in 32 games and accumulating an abysmal 7.92 ERA. The veteran then signed with the Nationals for the rest of the season, where he attained a 0.84 ERA in 24 games.

Clearly, Holland was comfortable with the Nationals, and when things went south with the Diamondbacks this year, Washington was there to swoop in and snag the reliever.

We'll see if this second trip to Washington can help Holland find his footing. The Nationals could use an effective arm in the bullpen as they push for a playoff spot down the stretch.
