Hartford Yard Goats Troll Yankees' Double-A Team Over No-Hitter
By Sean Facey
The Yankees' Double-A team, the Trenton Thunder, tossed a combined no-hitter on Monday against the Reading Fightin' Phils. A pop-out to center field was the final out of the game. Riveting stuff, I know.
The Hartford Yard Goats, however, had a different idea on how Reading could have avoided the dubious accomplishment of getting no-hit.
The Yard Goats hilariously suggested the Reading squad should have bunted to bust up the no-hitter in the ninth inning, as the Thunder did to them just a few weeks earlier.
The Thunder drew the ire of both the Yard Goats and baseball fans everywhere for tactics that many fans described as underhanded and Bush League.
It's easy to sympathize with them, though. Bunting for a hit under any circumstances during a no-hitter is one of baseball's biggest taboos, especially in the ninth inning.
Needless to say, it doesn't seem like the Yard Goats will get over the whole "bunting for a single in the ninth inning of a combined no-hitter" thing for a while.
Kudos to the Fightin' Phils for exercising restraint. Instead of trying to eke out a bunt hit to avoid the embarrassment of a goose egg in the hit column, they went down hacking.
