Heat Reportedly Suspend Dion Waiters for Season Opener
By Karl Rasmussen
The Miami Heat are just a few days away from their season opener against the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday, but in some surprising news, it looks like they'll start the season without one of their veteran scorers.
According to Tim Reynolds, the Heat have suspended Dion Waiters for their season opener.
Waiters was suspended for conduct detrimental to the team, though it's unclear at this time specifically what that entails.
Waiters was upset about not being named a starter for the team, so it's possible this situation stems from that. The suspension was announced the day after Kendrick Nunn exploded for 40 points in a preseason game.
Per Anthony Chiang, Waiters will be eligible to return to the team on Thursday, Oct. 24.
With Nunn perhaps looking to eat into Waiters minutes, and the emergence of Kentucky standout and first-round pick Tyler Herro as a possible starter, it was certainly noteworthy that the 27-year-old was the 10th person to come off the bench in Miami's final preseason game.
Last season in Miami, Waiters averaged 12 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 37.7% from deep. He played in 44 games while dealing with injury.
