Heisman Power Rankings After Week 1
By Jerry Trotta
College football returned with a bang over the weekend despite an inadequate compilation of mouth-watering showdowns. Therefore, the spotlight was on a profusion of Heisman Trophy candidates that were appointed before the season.
Some stumbled and failed to impress in their season-opening contest, but others had HUGE games to set the tone for what is sure to be a scintillating race. Here are the top six power rankings for CFB's best player after Week 1.
6. Trevor Lawrence
There's no doubting that Trevor Lawrence was the most disappointing of the bunch. In a 52-14 rout of Georgia Tech, Lawrence threw two interceptions compared to just one touchdown. He posted a lifeless QBR of 64.0, which now stands as his fourth-worst under center at the collegiate level. The star QB has a lot of work to do to catch up to the other candidates.
5. Jonathan Taylor
Jonathan Taylor's mind-boggling stat line could have been even more imposing if his Wisconsin Badgers weren't thrashing South Florida. In less than three full quarters of work, the junior rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns. The more surprising narrative, however, was the fact that he caught two balls for 48 yards and two additional scores -- the first receiving TD's of his world-beating career.
4. Justin Fields
What makes Justin Fields' performance against Florida Atlantic all the more daunting (for opposing defenses to come), is the fact that he wasn't even at his best. The five-star Georgia transfer finished 18 of 25 for 234 yards, with 61 rushing yards and FIVE total touchdowns.
3. Travis Etienne
There's no doubting that Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers have two legitimate Heisman-hopefuls on their star-studded roster. But it was tailback Travis Etienne that won the Week 1 performance. The junior stud rushed for 205 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries against Georgia Tech, highlighted by a dazzling 90-yard TD run in the first half.
2. Tua Tagovailoa
The 2018 Heisman Trophy finalist did all he could to repeat that feat again in his season-opener versus Duke over the weekend. Tua Tagovailoa torched the Blue Devils defense for 336 passing yards and four touchdowns while completing 83.9 percent of his 31 pass attempts.
1. Jalen Hurts
You think that Jalen Hurts was motivated to show out in his first appearance for Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma Sooners? Finally out of Tua Tagovailoa's shadow, the Alabama transfer had a field day against the Houston Cougars on Sunday. Hurts set the Sooners record for most yards in a debut, logging 508 total yards. He completed 20 of 23 pass attempts for 332 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 176 yards and an additional three scores. There's simply no other choice for the No.1 spot after Week 1.
