Here's How Yankees Could Trade for Emerging Tigers Ace Matthew Boyd
By Sean Facey
The Detroit Tigers are in the midst of a long rebuilding process that likely won't see them playing competitive baseball any time soon.
They're flush with pitching talent in the pipeline, making starter Matthew Boyd the perfect trade piece to net themselves the quality offensive talent that the farm system lacks.
Enter the Yankees, who could piece together the perfect package to assist in their rebuild.
Clint Frazier and Thairo Estrada would be the perfect two pieces to head to the Tigers in exchange for Boyd. Both are young, controllable talents who have shown great upside at the plate in the MLB, something Detroit is in dire need of.
Frazier would also fill any type of hole left by Nicholas Castellanos should he get traded or leave in free agency at the end of the season. Another arm like right-hander Trevor Stephan would round out the deal.
In exchange, the Yankees would receive an equally controllable pitcher in Boyd. He's got three years of arbitration left on his contract and is a quality arm, posting 118 strikeouts against just 19 walks in 2019.
It's a mutually beneficial deal in that the Yankees get the starter they need to stabilize a volatile rotation, while the Tigers get some young, quality help on offense. Of all the Yankees rotation workarounds, this seems to be the most logical.
