Here's What the Raptors Starting 5 Would Look Like Without Kawhi Leonard
By Jerry Trotta
Basketball fans everywhere are clamoring for Kawhi Leonard's free agency decision that will undoubtedly shape the Association for years to come. Because the Finals MVP is such a unique enigma, he'll likely continue to take his sweet old time pondering his future, but that won't stop us from playing the hypothetical game.
With the Lakers currently coined as the favorites to land the Board Man, let's examine what the Toronto Raptors lineup would look like next season should Kawhi choose to play in his hometown state.
5. C: Marc Gasol
To say that Gasol's decision to exercise his second-year player option to return to The North is big for the Raps wouldn't even begin to describe it. The three-time All-Star rounds out a starting five that will certainly make the postseason next season and could return to the Eastern Conference Finals if each player lives up to their potential.
4. PF: Serge Ibaka
Back in July of 2017, Serge signed a three-year, $65 million deal to extend his stay north of the border. The 29-year-old will be entering the final year of that deal and will look to build off a 15-point, 8-rebound 2018-2019 season.
3. SF: Pascal Siakam
Fresh off copping the Most Improved Player of the Year Award, Pascal is destined to only improve from here on out. The 25-year-old averaged 16.9 points and 6.9 rebounds while shooting 54% from the floor. Just imagine what those numbers could escalate to without Kawhi's 26.6 point points per game.
2. SG: OG Anunoby
We know what you're thinking. Why on earth isn't Danny Green in over Anunoby? Folks, Green has come out and said that his decision hinges on Kawhi's. As for Fred Van Fleet, he's a STUD off the bench and should once again assume his role as Nick Nurse's sixth man when play resumes in October. OG, however, only started in six of the 67 games that he appeared in last season but the Indiana product is BUZZING with potential that is waiting to be unleashed. Look for the 21-year-old to breakout next year.
1. PG: Kyle Lowry
There's no reason to believe that Lowry shouldn't return as the Raps point guard, a position he's held for the last seven seasons. His 14.2 points per game in 2018-2019 was the lowest tally he's posted since the 2012-2013 campaign, though his 8.7 assists were far-and-away the best account total of his career. Big things will be asked of him next season.
