Here's Why Yankees Haven't Announced Gerrit Cole and Brett Gardner Signings Yet
By Michael Luciano
Gerrit Cole agreed to terms with the New York Yankees what feels like an eternity ago, but there still hasn't been an official confirmation by the team.
While many Yankees fans have been left puzzled as to why the signing of Cole and the re-signing of outfielder Brett Gardner haven't been confirmed, it's due to a logjam on the roster and nothing more. Cole's press conference is still rumored to take place this week at Yankee Stadium, but before that pomp and circumstance (and the Gardy deal), GM Brian Cashman needs to clear two roster spots in order to finalize things.
So, what'll it be, Yankee fans? Big trade in the works? Or small clerical moves with Stephen Tarpley and Chance Adams?
Cole agreed to terms with the Yankees after being offered a nine-year, $324 million deal that would pay him $36 million per season. Gardner's deal was a lot more cost-effective, as he resigned with the Yankees on a one-year deal with an option to bring him back for a second season.
Yankees fans everywhere want to see Cole put on the No. 45 jersey, but it will have to wait until two players on the roster bite the dust. One player who is almost assuredly going to leave is starter JA Happ, who is currently being shopped across the league.
Rest assured, Yankees fans. Cole and Gardner are coming to New York. Cashman just needs to get a little creative with how he frees up a roster spot for the pair of them.
