Texans Bargain Shopping With Timmy Jernigan Signing While Having the Most Cap Space in the NFL is a Joke
By Jerry Trotta
It's well documented that Houston Texans head coach and de facto GM Bill O'Brien has no business being in an NFL front office role. However, you would think that he'd at least take some risks with his $35.88 million cap space to try to appease the masses, right?
Wrong. So wrong, in fact, that the Texans are pinching their pennies as if they were fighting against the cap. On Wednesday, Houston signed free agent defensive tackle Tim Jernigan, formerly of the Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles, to a one-year contract that holds a maximum value of just $3.75 million.
No disrespect to Jernigan, but it's almost as if the Texans are doing everything possible to push quarterback Deshaun Watson to his wits' end. From trading stud pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney last offseason to unloading all-world wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins this time around, Watson has every reason to call up O'Brien and request a trade yesterday.
In 10 games with the Eagles in 2019, the 27-year-old Jernigan registered 10 tackles, two sacks, and three QB hits.
Is that really supposed to impress Watson? Again, we are talking about a team with almost $36 million to throw around. If Houston actually intends on competing in 2020, well, the franchise has some serious explaining to do as to why it continues to cut corners in free agency as the player pool dries up.
