3 Moves Joe Judge Should Make Right Away to Change Culture in New York
The New York Giants made a bit of a surprising move this week in hiring 38-year-old Joe Judge as their new head coach. He held his introductory press conference Thursday, offering up the usual motivational remarks and promises about what the future will hold. Now that it's time to get down to business, Judge has to make a few specific moves to change the game at the Meadowlands, starting with these three.
3. Hire a Rising Star Offensive Coordinator
The Giants cannot afford to hire a retread like Freddie Kitchens or Jason Garrett at offensive coordinator. They just can't. Judge needs to hire someone that aligns with his way of thinking -- and who specifically believes in Daniel Jones' potential as a franchise quarterback. He doesn't need anyone seeking power and can jumpstart the offense by bringing in an individual with some creative flair. No more failed coaches who get hired because of their names alone.
2. Handle All Public Messaging on Personnel Moves
Dave Gettleman has put his foot in his mouth more than once as general manager of the Giants. He has a habit of saying the wrong thing, and that has made the entire organization look bad on a number of occasions. Judge should volunteer to be the face of the team and handle media questions on personnel moves, keeping Gettleman behind the scenes. Judge's attitude Thursday showed he is more than capable of taking on this role.
1. Embrace Analytics
Gettleman is not known as an analytics guy, and that has surely hurt the Giants' development under his leadership. Judge can now come in and use the extra information to get the best out of his entire roster if he's ready to take on that challenge. Ignoring advanced statistical measures is just foolish at this point in the NFL, and Judge has a real chance to change the culture in that regard. This will help the Giants catch up with the rest of the league (and potentially avoid another stinker of a season).
