Philly Sports Radio Personality's Latest Cam Newton Take is the Dumbest Yet
By Scott Rogust
The Carolina Panthers quickly entered a new head coach Matt Rhule. It looked like there was a chance the team would go ahead with longtime franchise quarterback Cam Newton in 2020 despite rumors to the contrary. Instead, Rhule signed Teddy Bridgewater and sent Cam packing.
Now, Netwon is struggling to find a new home in the NFL due to the league's better teams generally not needing a starting quarterback as of this writing. And that did not stop Philadelphia sports personality Howard Eskin from tweeting out possibly the dumbest take about Newton... ever.
When making an argument that an athlete isn't a winner, you probably shouldn't, you know, list the things he's won. Bringing up Newton's NFL MVP, Rookie of the Year, and Heisman accolades makes you point null.
For good measure, he also won national championships at the junior college and NCAA levels, as well as an NFC title with Carolina. But sure, he's not a winner.
Newton proved throughout his career that he's a nightmare for defenses when fully healthy. He's a quarterback with the build of a tight end and the speed of a running back. Those are attributes that coaches crave for, especially in today's NFL. Hell, Newton almost single-handedly brought the Panthers to Super Bowl 50, an achievement that's impossible to erase.
Eskin is experiencing some recency bias. Newton didn't play well the past two seasons because of shoulder and foot injuries. As a result, his play looked worse than it normally does, but when he's 100%, he's an authentic force to be reckoned with.
Newton will find a new team down the line, quite possibly during training camp. Don't foolishly count him out. Let's be real, Eskin did this for attention, and if you look at his tweet's comments-to-likes ratio, he got just that.
