Reporter Gets DM'ed Scoop of Hunter Pence Agreeing to Deal With Giants Over Loud Phone Call in Airport
By Jerry Trotta
Hunter Pence is one of the MLB's true enigmas and his reported destination in free agency on the heels of a tremendous bounce back year with the Texas Rangers in 2019 confirms that notion.
According to Craig Calcaterra of NBC Sports, the 36-year-old veteran is refusing the Houston Astros and San Diego Padres in favor of the rebuilding San Francisco Giants.
But perhaps the manner in which Calcaterra received this scoop is bigger news.
Pence was reportedly being loud on his phone during a conversation in the airport and someone eavesdropped and delivered the news to a trusted scribe. Perfect.
Pence spent five seasons with Houston at the start of his MLB career, earning two All-Star appearances in that span. It's worth mulling if the Astros' sign-stealing scandal persuaded him to seek out another destination.
We're not entirely sure what Pence has against San Diego, who boast one of the most exciting young rosters in the league. Maybe it just came down to the fact that San Francisco holds a special place in his heart. After all, Pence spent nearly seven seasons with the Giants and helped them win two World Series titles.
You would think that Pence, who is evidently on the back nine of his career, would pursue another run at the Commissioner's Trophy, but he seems content playing out the rest of his years, or at least the 2020 campaign, at his old stomping grounds.
In 2019, Pence was named the AL Comeback Player of the Year with Texas, hitting .297/.358/.552 with 18 home runs and 59 RBI in 286 at-bats.
His return to San Fran hasn't been confirmed as of yet, but it would serve as a perfect testament to his quirky and compelling personality.
