Indians' Carlos Carrasco Thanks Fans After Winning Roberto Clemente Award
By Sean Facey
For his courage and community outreach, Cleveland Indians star Carlos Carrasco was named this year's recipient of the Roberto Clemente award, and in a show of class, he thanked both the league and the fans for the honor.
"Thank you to @mlb and to all who voted for me as the Roberto Clemente Award winner," he said on social media. "This is an incredible honor and something I have dreamed about since I was a kid. Let's all continue to make this world a better place!"
He has endured more than his fair share of adversity this year. The veteran pitcher was diagnosed with leukemia midway through the season. In a show of strength, though, he bravely fought back against it, even pitching again in relief in September months after the diagnosis.
And on top of all of that, he and his wife still found time to provide lunches to the homeless, among a number of other charitable endeavors.
Carrasco has been a role model on and off of the field, and he was absolutely deserving of the honor. Seeing him thank everyone involved in the process is just proof of his selflessness.
He stands out as an example of what athletes across the league and professional sports as a whole should strive to be.
