Indications Are Yankees Won't Add a Starter Before Wednesday Trade Deadline
By Adam Weinrib
Yankee fans, you're not going to like what you're about to hear right now.
But Brian Cashman does have several hours left to prove it wrong.
As the trade deadline swiftly approaches and the asking prices get higher on even the most marginal of acquisitions, rumors out of New York claim the Yankees are less and less likely to add a starting pitcher. Instead, they'll turn to relief options, like Shane Greene, to bolster the bullpen.
Ignoring the Zack Wheeler talk for a moment (he'll never be a Yankee, the Mets are asinine, he won't be very good until he's an Astro), I'll enter the dojo with the lukewarm take that, outside of Trevor Bauer and Marcus Stroman, there isn't really anyone out in the world the Yanks should pay an exorbitant price for.
Though the team just had one of the worst weeks from its collective rotation you'll ever see, the bottom line is the rotation isn't overloaded with trash, but rather packed with average-to-good arms. Seeing as that's all that's available at the deadline, too, barring a miracle, with Robbie Ray, Mike Minor and Lance Lynn floating around, would it really be the biggest mistake in the world to pass?
The mistakes have already been made--getting trumped for Bauer and Stroman is certainly embarrassing. Why compound it by trading for James Paxton's twin in Robbie Ray? Fortify the bullpen, have a quick hook down the stretch, and ride with the people in the clubhouse, who are clearly uncomfortable with all this trade talk and malaise.
