Insane Red Sox Stat Shows Incredible Turnaround Since Early Season Woes
By Sean Facey
After the first few weeks of baseball, the sky was falling for the Boston Red Sox. Their pitching was horrific and their offense was sparse as the losses kept piling on. It wasn't the start the reigning World Series champs had anticipated.
On April 17, Boston was 6-13 and 8.5-games out of first place in the AL East, all but destined to endure a disappointing World Series hangover.
Since then, though, they've staged a remarkable turnaround, and their run differential proves just how insane they've been.
The Sox rebounded from their hideous -42 run differential to outscore their opponents by 69 runs during a stretch in which they won 16 times in 22 games.
In short, they once again resemble the machine of a ball club that won 108 games and finished with the second-best run differential in baseball last year.
Now 22-19, they're just three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays who sit atop the AL East. Their 220 runs scored are the second-most in the AL, trailing only the 27-15 Houston Astros.
It seems that there's just no keeping this team down. With the offense back in a groove and ace Chris Sale finally rounding into form, the rest of the league has been put on notice.
Midway through April, the Red Sox were dead in the water, unable to get runs on the board, or even rely their starting pitchers to get them through the early innings. Now the team is within striking distance of the division lead and they seem determined to prove their early-season doubters wrong.
