Inspiring Gerrit Cole Quote Proves Being a Yankee Was Always Meant to Be Part of His Legacy
Gerrit Cole grew up a New York Yankees fan and is living every kid's dream of playing for his favorite team. He is also making $324 million, which also helps him be excited about the new job.
But Cole did bring up one big reason why he wanted to go play for his favorite team Wednesday, and it notably had zero to do with dollars and cents.
"I thought, what better way to set an example for my future kids and for my family than to really follow through on that expectation," he said, "and set an example on a personal level?"
Feels!
It is easy to make jokes about Cole being paid so much, but at some point, the money is so much that it doesn't matter if he gets $250 million or $300 million. Ultimately, his decision to go play for the Yankees was a personal one.
Need proof? Even saved the famous sign he took to the 2001 World Series as a young Yankee fan.
Is it truly the same sign? Based on how passionate Cole is about the Yankees it is hard to doubt him. Making up a new one would just be weird.
Cole got the big contract and shared some inspiring words in the homecoming introduction. Now comes the expectations that arrive with all the fun. That is how his legacy in New York will be defined. But for now, all indications are that this man is finally where he always intended to be.
