Jacob deGrom's Mets Debut Sadly Foreshadowed the Terrible Run Support He'd Get Over the Years

It was relieving to witness the MLB do right by Jacob deGrom in awarding him with back-to-back Cy Young awards despite a middling win tally. As far as hurlers that receive next to zero run support are concerned, the New York Mets star might top the list.

Unfortunately for fans in Queens, deGrom being let down by his offense can be traced back to his big league debut, which came six years ago to the date on Friday. In the final game of a series against the New York Yankees, the three-time All-Star surrendered one run on four hits and fanned six batters in seven innings of work.

In fitting fashion, the Mets walked away as losers in a 1-0 pitcher's duel.

deGrom has produced lines similar to the one above countless times since over the last six years, and he's ended up as the losing pitcher or with a no-decision far too often. To put things into perspective, the 31-year-old right-hander boasts a career 2.62 ERA. Coming into 2020, he's averaged 11 wins per season.

Irony often associates itself with the Mets, so it really shouldn't come as a surprise that deGrom posted 15 wins in his worst season as a pro in 2017, when he logged a 3.53 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. On top of that, the former Rookie of the Year has a combined 21 wins in his last two campaigns, both of which ended with him winning the NL Cy Young.

Mets fans often have a multitude of reasons to question their devotion to the club, and deGrom's lack of run support over the years has been a prominent source of such feelings. To think that his MLB debut foreshadowed those shortcomings just adds insult to injury.
