With the first week of preseason games officially upon us, there remains a number of players holding out after failing to come to an agreement on a long-term contract. Among those players is Jadeveon Clowney, the Houston Texans' star pass rusher and former first overall pick who has yet to arrive at the team's training camp facility.

However, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Clowney's holdout could end without a new contract sooner than many originally expected.

The tentative plan is for Clowney to report after Week 3 of the preseason, giving him a week to prepare for opening kickoff.

If true, Clowney's arrival at camp will warrant a huge sigh of relief for the Texans. He plays a key role on the team's talented defense, and although he may not be the most productive pass-rusher on the team, he's certainly the most athletically gifted player coming off the edge.

In 2018, the outside linebacker logged 9 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 3 fumble recoveries in 15 games of action. His impact on the field goes beyond the basic numbers, though, and his performance last season earned him the 5th-best grade among edge defenders in 2018, according to Pro Football Focus.

If he chooses to return, Clowney will play out the 2019 season under the franchise tag, on a one-year salary of $15.97 million.
