Jaguars Are Savages for Firing Tom Coughlin Even Though He Was Going to Leave Anyway

The Jacksonville Jaguars are 5-9 and will be done with their disappointing 2019 season in under two weeks. Change is coming already, however, and one of those is at the top of the organization.
Tom Coughlin was fired Wednesday from his position as executive vice president of football operations. Oddly, the decision comes now despite the fact that he was preparing to leave his post voluntarily at the end of the season.
Tom Coughlin had planned to leave the Jaguars on his own after the season, but the Jaguars didn't give him a chance to resign or retire before firing him today https://t.co/0KXxZilRtg

This is, to put it lightly, an odd move to make regarding a guy who has had some great moments with the franchise since it started in 1995. He was the team's first head coach and put football on the map in Jacksonville, and the team made the AFC title game in his first season as VP in 2017.
Such a drastic move with only two games left may mean owner Shad Khan saw some kind of disaster looming and wanted Coughlin out ASAP. He expressed as much in a statement about the firing.

After Coughlin's first season back in Jacksonville, contract disputes and a down year arrived in 2018. Nick Foles was supposed to be the savior this season, but now, his contract looks like a disaster.
Coughlin will always be a respected member of the Jaguars organization. But when the history is written, he'll be remembered only as a coach and not as an exec. That's just the way it is.
