Jaguars Fire Team VP Tom Coughlin Amid Another Letdown Season
By Scott Rogust
The Jacksonville Jaguars were expected to make major changes at the end of the season, but ownership decided to make a move early to get a leg up on retooling for the future.
Tom Pelissero of NFL Network was the first to report that the Jaguars fired executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin on Wednesday evening.
The Jags made the news earlier this week due to an NFL Players Association grievance filed against them in regards to the treatment of players. The biggest issues raised? Coughlin and the Jaguars organization fining players for not receiving medical treatment at team facilties during the offseason.
Former defensive end Dante Fowler reportedly received as much as $700,000 in fines for "failing to oblige" to the organization's demands in this regard. In fact, the NFLPA went as far as urging impending free agents to not sign with Jacksonville at all.
On top of that, Coughlin couldn't bring the team back to it's former heights. In 2017, Coughlin's first year in the front office, Jacksonville made it all the way to the AFC Championship Game. Last season, they finished last in the AFC South, an unfortunate feat they're on pace to repeat.
Not only that, but big signings proved to be disastrous for the team's development. Blake Bortles and Nick Foles were given huge contracts, but neither lived up to their end of the bargain.
With so much negativity facing the Jaguars franchise, owner Shad Khan decided that enough was enough, and showed Tom Coughlin the door. Now comes a new era on the banks of the St. Johns.
