Jaguars Plan to Hire Jay Gruden as Offensive Coordinator
Jay Gruden was fired by the Washington Redskins this past season after an 0-5 start to the year.
He had limited success as a head coach, at least in the NFL, and made a name for himself as an offensive coordinator. Gruden is now reportedly set to return to that role with the Jacksonville Jaguars, replacing the recently fired John DeFilippo.
That means Gruden is now paired with Doug Marrone, who may be in a playoff-or-bust season in 2020. Though that is not Gruden's problem to worry about.
Gruden joins an interesting situation where there is not a clear-cut option at starting quarterback. Nick Foles would be the obvious choice because of his contract, but Gardner Minshew did show flashes of success in 2019.
The Jaguars were near the middle of the NFL with 341.8 yards per game in 2019. The problem was the offense only averaged 18.8 points per game. Gruden's Redskins finished last in points per game, though he was only around for five games.
Marrone needs a boost on offense to keep his job and he will be trusting Gruden to turn things around. The first major decision is choosing a quarterback.
