3 Jaguars Veterans Who Could Be Cut After the NFL Draft
By Scott Rogust
It's crazy to think that the Jacksonville Jaguars were just one victory away from reaching the Super Bowl two years ago. They've since entered a tumultuous downward spiral. Most key members of that team are now gone largely due to the organization's dysfunction. Luckily, they have 12 picks total and two first-round selections in this year's NFL Draft to expedite their rebuild. That means some veterans will be on the way out in order for the team to welcome the rookie class.
Here are three veterans the Jags could cut as a result.
3. QB Joshua Dobbs
Even though the Jaguars are expressing their confidence in Gardner Minshew, it's still not stopping the rumors of the team finding a new starter. Names like Andy Dalton and Cam Newton have been linked to Jacksonville, and there's a likelihood that the Jaguars could take a signal caller in the NFL Draft. If the team is to make an addition at quarterback, Joshua Dobbs could be shown the door. The former Pittsburgh Steeler hasn't seen much of the field and it's likely the Jags want a more experienced backup in case Minshew gets hurt or regresses. Dobbs carries no dead money, so the choice is easy.
2. James O'Shaughnessy
Tight end has always been a weakness for the Jaguars, who've yet to have a consistent starter at the position. This offseason, Jacksonville signed former Cincinnati Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert, who's proven to be a quality player...when healthy. Considering they committed $9.5 million to him over the next two years, the Jaguars won't have much need for James O'Shaughnessy, who's far from an explosive threat in the passing game. Add that to his $50,000 in dead money, and the Jaguars will have an easy cut candidate after the draft.
1. Marqise Lee
The Jaguars are heavily expected to take a wide receiver with one of their first-round selections. The need is obvious, considering the organization has put its faith in quarterback Gardner Minshew. Adding the likes of Jerry Jeudy or CeeDee Lamb would give the Jaguars a crowded wideout depth chart, so somebody will have to go. Marqise Lee has only played in six games the past two seasons due to injury. Given the rise of DJ Chark, Lee's services are no longer needed. Yes, he accounts for $3.5 million in dead money, but it's a price the Jags will have to pay in order to build a winning football team, especially since they'll end up saving over $5 million with the move.
