Former Browns QB Jake Delhomme Thinks Baker Mayfield Could Possibly Lose Starting Job to Case Keenum
By Brady Williams
The Cleveland Browns have backed Baker Mayfield numerous times. He's their quarterback and former No. 1 overall pick. This is supposed to be the guy to bring the franchise back from the dead.
However, when the Browns signed quarterback Case Keenum this offseason, it apparently led former Browns quarterback to question the the team's confidence in Mayfield.
Jake Delhomme told CBS Sports Radio that if the third-year quarterback has more troubles in 2020, Keenum could get the nod. The remarks were tied to his assertion that better quarterback play could solve a lot of Cleveland's troubles.
Keenum himself also hasn't been shy about how ready he is to take over if the situation calls for it.
"If Baker’s shoelace comes untied and he needs to maybe go get a drink of Gatorade at the water station, I’m going to be ready to go," he told Cleveland.com, "If I need to take a few snaps, I’m going to handle myself well and I know that I can."
Keenum has been in the NFL since 2012, and has played for five different teams. Most recently, he spent time with the Washington Redskins. He's never made the jump to being a franchise quarterback, but he's a reliable veteran, which is probably why Delhomme has such an inclination to believe this situation could become a reality.
But Browns fans are hoping to the high heavens this doesn't happen because it'll likely mean their 2020 season is a massive failure.
