Jake Fromm Actually Landed in Strangely Ideal Situation in Buffalo
By Carter Owen
Jake Fromm undoubtedly had a disappointing draft experience. He left school early hoping to get picked in rounds two or three, but was left waiting around on Day 3 to hear his name called.
Despite his slide down draft boards, he might want to keep his head up. Going to the Buffalo Bills might be the best thing that ever happened to him.
The Bills finished the past season with a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Houston Texans in a game where 12 of their 19 points came off field goals. Additionally, Josh Allen is heading into a crucial third year of his career. While he improved from Year 1 to Year 2, he still only managed to throw 20 touchdowns in addition to nine interceptions last year, remaining renowned for arm strength over accuracy. He will need to make bigger improvements this season to assure the Bills front office that he is their quarterback of the future.
If Allen doesn't take that next step, or gets injured with some of his trademark recklessness, Fromm could quickly find himself as the starting quarterback. With Tom Brady's departure from New England, the AFC East is wide open for the first time in a long time. The Bills are desperate to win the division and make a deep run in the playoffs. If Allen and his howitzer can't make that happen this year, Fromm's change of pace and accuracy may mean his insertion into the lineup comes sooner rather than later.
It has become abundantly clear that so much of a quarterback's success depends on the situation and organization he gets drafted to. Josh Rosen got drafted to an awful team in Arizona and then got shipped to a tanking team in Miami. Even though Fromm would have liked to have been picked much higher in the draft, he should be thankful to go to a functional organization with playoff aspirations.
Bottom line? Fromm's strengths are Allen's weaknesses. If Allen fails to build on his case in Year 3, Buffalo now has a perfect change-of-pace backup to turn to, with deft touch.
