Jake Fromm Has to Be More Than a Game Manager for Georgia to Win College Football Playoff
By Mark Powell
If Jake Fromm's completed a pass beyond 10 yards this season, we must've missed it.
Sure, that's a harsh conclusion. But even with the shortcomings of James Coley, Fromm hasn't done this Georgia offense any favors. D'Andre Swift can only do so much, and Fromm's numbers, while effective, don't strike the avid college football fan as explosive.
If Georgia wants to reach their ultimate goal, which would have to include an SEC Championship Game win over likely SEC West champion LSU, Fromm must take another step in his development as a passer.
Fromm is a great leader. He's calm and composed in the pocket. But he is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a gunslinger.
In Coley's offense, that'll win you plenty of regular season games in the SEC. Gone are the days of dominant SEC defenses, meaning Fromm doesn't face NFL-level units typically until the SEC Title Game. Florida is fine. Auburn is fine. They are not the likes of LSU, Ohio State, Clemson or even Alabama.
Fromm has all the tools, including a rapidly-evolving receiving corps led by the likes of George Pickens. Swift is a threat receiving out of the backfield, as well, and James Cook ain't bad either.
Georgia fans cannot settle with Fromm's play, and should demand more out of Coley and Kirby Smart to build a system that not only keeps Fromm from turning the ball over, but puts up big numbers in dominant Georgia victories as well. If not, they will fall short in Atlanta or beyond.
