Jake Fromm Would Be Perfect Packers Project and Backup for Aaron Rodgers
By Dylan McCaffrey
The Green Bay Packers have 10 picks in the 2020 draft, their first coming at the 30th slot in the first round. The Pack can do plenty with that slot, and would best utilize it filling their various gaps, from linebacker to wide receiver (this draft is chock full of 'em).
At some point, though, it might be time to address their vacancy behind Aaron Rodgers -- that's why the Packers should should wait a bit and take Jake Fromm with a later-round selection.
By any metric, Fromm had an outstanding career as a QB at Georgia, earning a first-round grade early in his gilded tenure. He led the Bulldogs to compete for three SEC championship games, and a national championship appearance. His 63.3% pass completion percentage is good for fifth in SEC history, ahead of guys like Dak Prescott and Peyton Manning.
While NFL competition is far different from the NCAA, playing in the SEC is about as close as you can get. You can't expect much more out of a collegiate career than what Fromm's put on the board.
Rodgers is a two-time MVP and Super Bowl champ with 364 touchdowns to his name. By no means are we suggesting an immediate succession plan, nor are we touting that Fromm will absolutely be the caretaker to Rodgers' throne. But when you have an opportunity to get a backup with his pedigree in the same range you once took the toolsy Brett Hundley, the Packers would be wise to jump at the opportunity. He has the arm strength and the natural acumen. Now, it's all about learning the ropes of the game and straightening up his consistency.
We know a certain No. 12 who might be able to help with that.
