Jake Marisnick Appealing 2-Game Suspension for Mauling Jonathan Lucroy is as Arrogant as it Gets
By Daniel Marcillo
If you thought the dust had settled from Jake Marisnick bulldozing Los Angeles Angels catcher Jonathan Lucroy three weeks ago, think again.
Sometimes, players need to buck up and take responsibility for their mistakes. Unfortunately, the Houston Astros outfielder does not see himself as guilty of any special wrongdoing. Yes, Marisnick actually attempted to appeal his two-game suspension for his home plate collision that took Lucroy out of action for at least a month.
Marisnick made it clear that he was sad about the fact Lucroy got hurt, but it's hard to see how going shoulder to chin with a catcher is somehow unintentional. Even if certain collisions in front of home plate are legal, this one is surely one of the more brutal ones we've seen of late.
Lucroy had to be carted off the field, and suffered a concussion and broken nose. The Angels later retaliated by drilling Marisnick, and he didn't even cause any commotion on the field in response (unlike his teammates). That would seem to be a type of acknowledgment of guilt.
Marisnick broke MLB's collision rules, and has to face the consequences of his mistake. Just because he insists he did not intend to injure Lucroy it does not mean he deserves to be safe from discipline.
Missing two games compared to the 16 (and counting) that Lucroy has been unable to participate in should be considered a reward instead of punishment. It would be best for him to suck it up and take his lumps instead of trying to prove his innocence.
