Eagles Insider Already Predicting Jalen Hurts Will Send Carson Wentz Packing Come 2022
By Jerry Trotta
The Philadelphia Eagles stunned everyone during the NFL Draft when they selected Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts in the second round (No. 53 overall) to back up starter Carson Wentz.
However, the latest buzz indicates that Hurts could be Philly's long-term play under center. Eagles insider Joe Giglio has a gut feeling that the 21-year-old will be the Eagles starting gunslinger in 2022.
Well, that escalated quickly.
Last summer, the Eagles signed Wentz to a four-year, $128 million contract extension. They did so fully aware of the former No. 2 overall pick's concerning injury history, but it's worth noting that the deal comes with a potential out following the 2021 season.
If Wentz suffers another serious injury (or two) maybe Philadelphia decides to cut its losses and roll with Hurts. This is also highly contingent on the former Sooner proving over the next two years that he can handle the pressure of being a franchise QB in the NFL. Assuming that the Eagles wouldn't merely cut Wentz, moving on via trade would save the franchise close to $100 million in terms of cap hits from 2022-2024.
The Philadelphia media is often reactionary, but this seems to be an open-minded take from Giglio. At this point, there's just no way to know how this scenario will play out, and you can bet that it's an idea that will be thrown around over the next two seasons.
