Jalen Hurts Had Some Major Struggles on Day 1 of Senior Bowl Practice
By Michael Luciano
Former Alabama and Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts could use the Senior Bowl in Mobile as a chance to show that he can drop back and sling it at the NFL level. So far, that endeavor has fallen flat thanks to a bad day of practice.
Paired with Oregon's Justin Herbert, who was the most impressive quarterback there in Mobile, and Colorado's Steven Montez on the South team, Hurts was clearly the worst QB on the field for the South Tuesday, as he struggled with accuracy and ball placement in the blustery, 45 degree temperatures.
Hurts was never known to have a cannon for an arm, but his strength looks even worse when compared to the two rocket arms of Herbert and Montez, who were pushing the ball downfield with ease.
Hurts didn't look comfortable taking snaps under center or on deep dropbacks, as he had at least five or six throws that were behind receivers and landed incomplete. Hurts' average arm strength means that his accuracy and anticipation will be his meal ticket as a passer, and he failed to show much of either of those traits on Tuesday.
While Hurts still has two more days to improve his stock, and the way practice was set up didn't give him very many chances to display the off-script playmaking that nearly won him a Heisman in college, Hurts was either the worst or second worst quarterback at throwing from the pocket on Tuesday, with only Michigan's Shea Patterson rivaling him.
On the bright side, there's nowhere to go but up for a guy who has made a career out of proving doubters wrong.
