Saints Fans Will Love Jameis Winston's Comments After Signing With New Orleans
By Jerry Trotta
The New Orleans Saints stunned the NFL when it was revealed that they hammered out a one-year deal with free agent quarterback Jameis Winston, the former No. 1 overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, over the weekend.
Winston is taking the back seat to Drew Brees in the Big Easy, but he's naturally jonesing to get to work with his new team. In fact, the 26-year-old's latest comments are guaranteed to make Saints supporters feel like signing him was the right move.
"Being a part of the New Orleans Saints, with Drew Brees, Taysom Hill, Sean Payton, coach Joe Lombardi, coach Pete Carmichael Jr., when you think about that room, that's like a Harvard education at quarterback school," Winston said during an Instagram Live video on Tuesday night. "There's a proverb: Humility comes before honor. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be with Drew Brees and to be with the New Orleans Saints and just prepare for when my next opportunity is going to present itself."
Winston absolutely nailed it in describing what joining the Saints means to him. The Harvard metaphor was perhaps a bit unexpected, but it's apparent that the Florida State product feels that he can get his NFL career back on the right path under the tutelage of Sean Payton and the rest of New Orleans' coaching staff.
Winston seems to be willing to embrace whatever role the Saints have in store for him in 2020. Until that becomes more clear, the former Pro Bowler should focus all his energy on competing with Taysom Hill for the No. 2 spot on New Orleans' quarterback depth chart.
