James Coley Isn't Out of the Woods Just Yet
By Parker White
In his first year as the Georgia Bulldogs' offensive coordinator, James Coley has received mixed reaction from the fan base, predominately on the negative side until a recent string of high-scoring games. I mean, there was literally a petition started a month ago to have him fired.
Despite Georgia being 8-1 and ranked fourth in the College Football Playoff rankings, the Bulldogs offense hasn't been as lights out as you'd think considering they have Jake Fromm at quarterback and D'Andre Swift at running back.
So, yeah, Coley isn't out of the woods just yet when it comes to keeping his job.
Not only have they been lackluster on that side of the ball this season, but they have some tough opponents down the stretch, putting this Bulldogs offense to the test. It'll begin Saturday against the 12th-ranked Auburn Tigers.
If Georgia has a good showing by moving the ball and putting up points against Auburn, they still have to face a Jimbo Fisher-coached Texas A&M squad and Georgia Tech in a rivalry game.
Oh, and if Georgia gets through that stretch unscathed, they'll likely have to face an undefeated LSU team whose defense can be ferocious at times.
The easy thing for head coach Kirby Smart to do is bring Coley back, but his job is to call plays on offense and offer a nice compliment to their stout defense. So far, Georgia hasn't been as reliable on that side of the ball, which falls on Coley.
