Big Maple returned to the Big Apple after spending some time on the IL with knee inflammation. Though he was limited to just four innings pitched in Wednesday's game vs the Padres, lefty James Paxton was brilliant in making the most of what he had. Paxton did not allow a hit through those four innings, walking two and striking out seven on 66 pitches.

While many criticized Yankees manager Aaron Boone for the early hook, it's clear that one of the biggest offseason acquisitions for the team has returned to dominance. And why push Paxton, an injury-prone starter throughout his career, more than he needed to be in his first start back from the IL?

The big lefty clearly loves the cozy confines of the short-porched Yankee Stadium. Paxton's opponent, the Padres, were no slouches coming into the matchup, boasting a lineup that includes Manny Machado, Eric Hosmer, Franmil Reyes, Wil Myers and Fernando Tatis Jr, all quality major-league hitters capable of doing damage over the course of a nine-inning game.

Top it all off with rookie sensation pitcher Chris Paddack and the Padres had a good chance to win today. Paxton more than held his own coming off injury, however, and this should excite Yankees fans.

Pulling Paxton early will only benefit the first-place Bronx Bombers later, like when they will need the starting pitching boost down the stretch as they gear up for what should be a strong run at and during the postseason. All that matters is that the big lefty looks primed to dominate for the Yankees going forward and fans will be rewarded for their patience.
